Schools Regatta
History and Organisation
The South West Scotland Schools’ Regatta has been running for 7 seasons and has grown year on year. At the last event we saw 12 schools from throughout the region send over 90 pupils to compete.
The event was first introduced in 2003 by Annandale Sailing Club from Loch Maben. Annandale is the region's biggest dinghy sailing club and their efforts have made this event become what is today.
Over the years the local sailing communities within Dumfries and Galloway have worked in partnership to provide support and man power. This has allowed the event to grow and grow. In 2008 the Regatta was moved to the more central location of Loch Ken and the Galloway Activity Centre currently hosts the event.
Racing
The day is based on team racing. Schools enter teams of 3, each team having to race each other team at least once. This results in over 60 races being held on the day. Credit has to go to the race organisers for making this happen!
At present competitors race in the Galloway Activity Centre’s Laser Pico fleet. These boats are evenly matched and this is always a very hotly contested event. Competing teams come from as far west as Stranraer and as far east as Carlisle.
Tasters
A taster fleet was added to the Regatta in 2008 allowing less experienced sailors to take part in the event. This fleet is more about learning the basics of sailing and having lots of fun. Equally importantly, it allows children to race on their own. Galloway Activity Centre’s Laser Funboat fleet is used, providing safe and forgiving racing.
A separate trophy is awarded to the winning team within the taster fleet. The hope is that this year's taster sailors will be next season’s racers!
